USMLE: 3-step exam to practice medicine in the US, assessing knowledge, skills & principles.

Unique structure: Taken at different stages of medical education, tests mastery of material.

Step 1: Tests basic sciences with multiple-choice questions at end of second med school year.

Step 2: Two-day test in fourth year, including clinical knowledge and clinical skills.

Step 3: Two-day test after first year of residency, assesses readiness for unsupervised practice.

Emphasis on diagnosis, treatment, patient care via multiple-choice questions and simulations.
