New York University School of Medicine (NYUSM) is a private medical school in New York City, New York. The school was founded in 1841 and is one of the oldest medical schools in the country. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredits NYUSM and it is also part of New York University, which the Middle States Commission also accredits on Higher Education.

NYUSM is known for its research-intensive curriculum and is home to several research centers and institutes. This includes the Center for Drug Discovery, the Neuroscience Institute, and the Perlmutter Cancer Center. The school also has affiliations with several hospitals in the New York City area. This includes Bellevue Hospital, Tisch Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System.

Medical Programs Offered

NYUSM offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, which is a four-year program, preparing students for careers as physicians. Teaching and Curriculum at New York University School of Medicine

The MD curriculum at NYU SOM is a four-year program that prepares students for a career in medicine through a combination of classroom lectures, clinical experiences, and research opportunities. The curriculum also helps students develop a strong foundation in the basic sciences and clinical medicine, as well as critical thinking, communication, and professionalism skills.

The curriculum is in three phases: Foundational Science, Clinical Science, and Advanced Integration. Here is a brief overview of each phase:

Foundational Science:

The first two years of the MD program are focused on building a strong foundation in the basic sciences. Students take courses in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and immunology, among others. These courses are also taught through a combination of traditional lectures, small group discussions, and problem-based learning sessions. In addition to classroom work, students also participate in clinical skills training and community service projects.

Clinical Science:

In the third and fourth years of the MD program, students transition to clinical training. They spend time in a variety of clinical settings, including hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities, working alongside physicians and other healthcare professionals. During this phase, students also rotate through different specialties, such as surgery, pediatrics, and psychiatry, to gain exposure to a range of medical disciplines. They also participate in a longitudinal clinical experience, working with a small group of patients over an extended period of time.

Advanced Integration:

The final phase of the MD program focuses on advanced integration of knowledge and skills. Students take courses in medical ethics, health policy, and population health, among others. They also have the opportunity to participate in research projects or other scholarly activities, such as writing a thesis or completing a capstone project.

Throughout the MD program, NYU SOM emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration, cultural competence, and social responsibility. The curriculum also helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become competent and compassionate physicians.

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission to NYUSM, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and have completed the following prerequisite coursework: one year each of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics, as well as one semester of biochemistry.

The average GPA for admitted students is 3.85, and the average MCAT score is 520. NYUSM received approximately 9,200 applications for the class of 2024 and admitted 400 students, resulting in a 4.3% acceptance rate. Additionally, the class size for the MD program is approximately 120 students per year.

NYUSM does not offer a graduate entry pathway for its MD program. Furthermore, interviews are by invitation only and are conducted on a rolling basis from September through February.

Student Life

NYUSM offers a diverse and vibrant student life experience. Moreover, the school has several student organizations and interest groups, including the Student Government Association, the Health Equity Initiative, and the Pediatric Interest Group.
